Markups, which are when prices greater than the marginal cost of production, have increased in USA over last decades. Our paper explores differences markups between Information Technology (IT) and non-IT firms. By doing so, we contribute to understanding role IT industry increase markups. We extend De Loecker, Eeckhout, Unger (Citation2020), who find that publicly traded firms risen since 1980. They argue no has systematically higher develop a novel firm-level classification method using natural language processing (NLP) distinguish from approach differs commonly used North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Using our classification, markup period 1980 occurred two separate episodes. In first, until 1996, recovered fall 1970s. second episode, diverge enormously. Markups surge 47% 1996 80% 2018, while remains largely unchanged.
